Friday Fire Forces Evacuation of Walmart in Niles

Fire in the clothing department at the Walmart store in Niles forced evacuation of the store Friday afternoon, but fortunately the fire was quickly extinguished and nobody was hurt in the blaze.

Berrien County Sheriff’s Deputy K. VanKampen says that the Niles Township Fire Department was dispatched to the superstore at 2107 South 11th Street shortly after 330 in the afternoon on Friday when an alarm came in.

VanKampen says the fire was restricted to the clothing department and store employees began putting it out as the call went out to the fire department. Those employees continued to work with the fire department upon its arrival.

A short time later, the store was allowed to re-open, but the exact cause has yet to be determined and continues to be investigated.

In addition to the Berrien County Sheriff’s Department, first responders included units from Niles Township Fire Department, the Niles City Fire Department, Clay Township Fire, and the Southwest Michigan Community Ambulance Service.
