Permit for Corewell Health center in Benton Harbor approved

Benton Harbor City Commissioners have granted a special use permit to Corewell Health for its new Center for Better Health and Wellness at 145 West Main Street. At a Monday meeting, commissioners signed off on a Benton Harbor Planning Commission recommendation to allow the facility to open. Corewell is moving its current Center for Better Health and Wellness across the street to a building donated to it by Whirlpool. Following the vote Monday to allow the permit, City Commissioner Sharon Henderson said this is a big win for Benton Harbor.

“That investment will bring an opportunity for residents to use a medical center without having to travel outside of this community,” Henderson said. “I think that is an awesome thing, so I’m really excited about that.”

Corewell plans to offer basic health services at the center, enabling Benton Harbor residents to be screened without having to leave the city. The facility will have 12 exam rooms, a conference room, and a kitchen, among other things. It will give Corewell several times as much space as the current center offers. The goal is to have the facility open in the fall.
